Handling Difficult Coworkers With Grace on the Unit
Sometimes the hardest part of a shift isn't the patients. It's the coworker who gossips, the charge nurse who plays favorites, the doctor who snaps, or the teammate who never answers call lights. High stress and short staffing can bring out the worst in people. How do you respond like Jesus when someone is making your job harder?
Remember Everyone Is Under Pressure
Healthcare is exhausting for everyone. That doesn't excuse bad behavior, but it can soften how you see it. The person who snapped at you may have just come from a code. Proverbs 19:11 says, "The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression." Not every offense needs a response.
Answer Gently
"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). When tension rises at the nurses' station, a calm, kind tone can de-escalate what a sharp reply would ignite.
Address Problems Directly and Privately
Jesus gave a clear pattern in Matthew 18:15: go to the person privately first. Instead of venting to others, consider a calm, honest conversation: "I noticed this, and it made it hard for me to care for my patients. Can we figure out a better way?"
Refuse to Join the Gossip
Break rooms can become rumor mills. Ephesians 4:29 says, "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying." Changing the subject or simply staying quiet is a powerful witness.
Know When to Escalate
Grace doesn't mean ignoring unsafe behavior. If a coworker's actions put patients at risk, or if you're facing harassment or bullying, follow your facility's reporting process. Protecting the vulnerable is a biblical value too (Proverbs 31:8-9).
Pray for Them
Jesus said, "Pray for them which despitefully use you" (Matthew 5:44). It's hard to stay bitter at someone you're praying for by name. Prayer may not change them overnight, but it will change you.
A Prayer for Difficult Coworkers
Lord, You know how hard it is to work with ____. Give me patience, wisdom, and a gentle answer. Help me see them the way You do. Bless them, and make our unit a place of peace. Amen.
A Little Humor Helps
Sometimes the best way to diffuse tension is a laugh. Our funny Christian gifts and Prayer Request mugs bring a little holy humor to the break room.
