Nursing School and Faith: How to Keep God First Through Exams and Clinicals
Pharmacology flashcards. Care plans due at midnight. Clinicals at 6 a.m. Finals week. If you're in nursing, medical, pharmacy, or any healthcare program, you know how all-consuming school can be. It's easy to let your time with God be the first thing that gets cut. But this season is exactly when you need Him most.
God Called You Here
On the nights you wonder if you're cut out for this, remember: the desire to care for people didn't come from nowhere. Philippians 1:6 promises, "He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." If God called you to this field, He'll carry you through the training too.
Study as Worship
Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord." That includes memorizing lab values. Your future patients will depend on what you learn now. Every hour of study is an act of love for people you haven't met yet.
Practical Ways to Keep Faith Strong in School
- Pray before you study. Ask God for focus and memory. James 1:5 promises wisdom to those who ask.
- Use Scripture as study breaks. Read a Psalm between chapters instead of scrolling.
- Find your people. Join or start a Christian student group in your program. Study and pray together.
- Protect your sleep. Psalm 127:2 reminds us that God "giveth his beloved sleep." All-nighters aren't more spiritual.
- Keep Sunday (or your Sabbath) simple. Even a few hours of rest and worship will help you study better the rest of the week.
When You Fail an Exam
It happens to so many students. A failed test is not a verdict on your calling or your worth. Your identity is in Christ, not in your GPA. Take a breath, pray, ask for help from instructors or tutors, and try again. Proverbs 24:16 says, "A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again."
A Prayer Before an Exam
Lord, I've studied and prepared. Calm my nerves, clear my mind, and help me remember what I've learned. Whatever the result, my worth is in You. Amen.
