What Does "Child of God" Really Mean?

"Child of God" may be one of the most familiar phrases in Christianity. It's printed on shirts, sung in worship songs, and spoken over babies at dedications. But what does it actually mean, and how should it change the way you live?

Everyone is made by God; His children are made new

Every person is created in God's image and deeply valued by Him (Genesis 1:27). But the Bible uses "children of God" in a special way: for those who receive Jesus and are brought into God's family.

John 1:12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."

Galatians 3:26: "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."

You don't become God's child by being good enough, born into the right family, or attending enough church. You become His child by faith in Jesus.

Adopted, not tolerated

Galatians 4:6–7: "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."

In the Roman world Paul wrote to, an adopted child received full legal rights, a new name, and a full inheritance. God's adoption is the same. You're not a guest in His house. You're family.

What being God's child gives you

  • Belonging: You have a Father who will never leave.
  • Access: You can come to Him anytime, calling Him "Abba."
  • Inheritance: "If children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:17).
  • Assurance: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God" (Romans 8:16).
  • A future: "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be" (1 John 3:2).

Living like God's child

Rest instead of striving. Children don't earn their place in the family. They live from it.

Bring everything to your Father. Big worries and small requests alike.

Resemble your Father. Children grow to look like their parents. As God's child, you grow to reflect His love, kindness, and holiness over time.

Treat other believers as family. They're your brothers and sisters.

Speak it over the little ones

One of the most powerful things parents can do is tell their children early and often: "You are a child of God." Our Child of God Collection and toddler tees make that truth something kids can wear, and grow up believing.

A prayer

Abba, Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family through Jesus. I'm not a servant trying to earn my place; I'm Your child and heir. Help me live from that belonging today: resting in Your love, bringing You everything, and growing to look more like You. Amen.
