Prayers for Anxiety When Your Mind Won't Slow Down
Anxiety doesn't always wait for a convenient time. It can hit in the car, at work, in the middle of the night, or right before a doctor's appointment. When your mind won't slow down, long prayers can feel impossible. Here are short, honest prayers for anxious moments: words you can pray when you can't find your own.
1 Peter 5:7: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
When your mind is racing
Lord, my thoughts are spinning. I can't slow them down on my own. I give You every worry, one by one. Keep my mind in Your perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3). Amen.
When panic hits
Try a breath prayer. Breathe in slowly, pray the first half; breathe out slowly, pray the second half:
- Breathe in: "Be still…" Breathe out: "…and know that I am God."
- Breathe in: "The Lord is my shepherd…" Breathe out: "…I shall not want."
- Breathe in: "You are with me…" Breathe out: "…I will not fear."
Repeat until your breathing slows.
When you can't sleep
Father, it's late and my mind won't rest. You never sleep, so I don't have to stay on guard. I lay down every worry and trust You to hold it overnight. Give me sweet sleep (Psalm 4:8). Amen.
For health worries
Lord, I'm afraid about my health. You know my body better than any doctor. Give me peace while I wait for answers, wisdom for next steps, and trust that my times are in Your hands. Amen.
When you're anxious about your kids
Father, I can't protect my children from everything, but You can go where I can't. I place them in Your hands. Calm my fears and guard their hearts. Amen.
For social anxiety
Lord, I'm nervous about this conversation, event, or meeting. Calm my body and my thoughts. Remind me that my worth isn't based on how I come across. Help me be present and kind. Amen.
When you don't even know why you're anxious
Romans 8:26: "…for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Lord, I don't know what's wrong. I just feel anxious. Thank You that Your Spirit prays for me when I don't have words. Hold me. Amen.
Getting help is wise
Prayer is powerful, and so is getting support. If anxiety affects your sleep, work, or relationships for weeks at a time, please talk with your doctor or a counselor. That's not a lack of faith; it's caring for the mind God gave you.
