Is Rest Lazy? How to Rest Without Guilt as a Christian

By the Claimed by God Designs Team

You finally sit down, and the guilt sits down with you. There's laundry. There are emails. Someone needs something. Shouldn't I be doing more for God? For a lot of believers, resting feels like slacking.

But here's the good news: rest isn't laziness. It's obedience.

Even Jesus Rested

After a busy season of ministry, Jesus told His disciples, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). The crowds hadn't gone away. The needs weren't all met. He still called a break.

He even slept through a storm (Mark 4:38). The Savior of the world took naps. You're allowed to sit down.

God Built Rest Into the Week

The fourth commandment says, “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God” (Exodus 20:9–10). Rest isn't a reward for finishing everything. It's a rhythm God commanded, partly to remind us that the world doesn't depend on us. It depends on Him.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late… for so he giveth his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2).

Laziness vs. Rest

  • Laziness avoids what God has given you to do.
  • Rest receives what God has given you to recover.

If you're running on empty, rest is often the most responsible thing you can do. You can't pour from a cup God never asked you to drain.

How to Rest Without Guilt

  • Plan it. Put rest on the calendar like any other commitment.
  • Name the guilt and answer it: “Jesus rested. I can too.”
  • Choose rest that refills you: a nap, a walk, worship music, time outside, a slow meal.
  • Let someone else carry something. You're part of a body, not the whole body (1 Corinthians 12).
  • Come to Jesus tired. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

When Rest Isn't Enough

If you rest and still feel exhausted, hopeless or numb, it may be burnout or depression. Talk with your doctor. Read more in Rest Is Holy: Christian Burnout and Sabbath.
