When the Holidays Hurt: Faith, Grief and Depression at Christmas

By the Claimed by God Designs Team

The lights go up. The music starts. Everyone seems happy, and you're just trying to get through it. Maybe someone is missing from the table this year. Maybe your family is complicated. Maybe you're battling depression and the pressure to be joyful makes it worse.

If the holidays hurt, you're not ungrateful, and you're not a bad Christian.

There's a Time to Mourn

“To every thing there is a season… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4). Sometimes those seasons overlap, and you're mourning while everyone else is dancing. That's allowed.

Christmas Was Born Into Hardship

The first Christmas wasn't a picture-perfect scene. It came with a long trip, a borrowed stable, a king who wanted the baby dead and a family forced to flee (Matthew 2:13–14). Jesus came into a hurting world, not a polished one. He meets you in yours.

Ways to Protect Your Heart This Season

  • Lower expectations. You don't have to do every tradition, attend every party or bake every recipe.
  • Plan for hard moments. Have an exit plan, a safe person to text, or a quiet room to step into.
  • Honor who's missing. Light a candle, share a story or set out a photo.
  • Keep some routines. Sleep, meals and movement steady your mood.
  • Watch the alcohol. It can deepen depression and anxiety.
  • Say no kindly. “Thank you for inviting me. I'm going to sit this one out.”

You're Loved Right Now

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God didn't wait for you to be okay to love you. He doesn't need you to be cheerful this December either.

For the People Around Them

If someone you love is struggling, “weep with them that weep” (Romans 12:15). Invite without pressure, and check in after the holidays, too, when the decorations come down and the loneliness can hit hardest.
