How to love me in the waiting

  • Please don’t ask when we’re having kids.
  • Tell me about your pregnancy privately, before announcing it.
  • Understand if I skip a baby shower.
  • Remember hard days with a text.
  • Just sit with me. You don’t have to fix it.

Four-week support group guide

For infertility and pregnancy loss support groups, or two friends. About 45–60 minutes. Keep the group confidential, and let anyone pass on any question. Partners welcome.

Week 1 · Poured out

Read: 1 Samuel 1:1–18

  1. Where do you see yourself in Hannah’s story?
  2. Who has misunderstood your grief, like Elkanah and Eli misunderstood Hannah’s?
  3. What would it mean to pour out your soul before God this week?

Practice: Each person names one honest feeling. Pray for each one by name.

Week 2 · Not a verdict

Read: Luke 1:5–7; John 9:1–3; Romans 8:1

  1. Have you blamed yourself, or been blamed by others?
  2. What does it mean that Elizabeth was righteous and childless?
  3. What lie do you need to stop believing?

Practice: Write the lie down, and next to it write what God says.

Week 3 · Grief and remembrance

Read: Psalm 139:13–16; 2 Samuel 12:15–23

  1. What or who are you grieving?
  2. What has helped you grieve, and what hasn’t?
  3. How could you remember your baby or your hope in a way that brings comfort?

Practice: Fill in a remembrance card, or write a prayer for your hope.

Week 4 · Held in the wait

Read: Psalm 27:13–14; Isaiah 56:3–5; Isaiah 43:1–3

  1. What does courageous waiting look like for you right now?
  2. How has God been near, even in this?
  3. How can this group keep caring for one another?

Practice: Pray Isaiah 43:1 over each person, using their name.
