The Older Brother EffectGod throws the party. Don’t stand outside it.

In Luke 15, the prodigal came home and the faithful son stood outside the celebration, arms crossed. The father went out to both of them. This is for both of them.

Some of us have been in church so long we’ve forgotten what walking in for the first time feels like. Some of us are new, or coming back, and one look or one comment almost sent us home. Pick your side of the pew.

The heart of it

Holiness still matters. Truth still matters. But Jesus came “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14), not grace or truth, and He usually connected before He corrected. Zacchaeus changed at the dinner table, not before he was invited to it.

“It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.”Acts 15:19 (NIV)

Built on Luke 15:11–32, Acts 15:19, Romans 14:1 and Galatians 6:1. Great for small groups, welcome teams and new-member classes.
