Hedges of Protection: How to Guard Your Marriage From Affairs
No one plans to have an affair. It usually starts small: a lingering conversation, a private message, an emotional connection that feels harmless. That's why wise couples build "hedges" around their marriage long before temptation shows up.
What Scripture says
Hebrews 13:4: "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled."
Proverbs 4:23: "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
Job 31:1: "I made a covenant with mine eyes." Job decided ahead of time where his eyes would and wouldn't go.
Why hedges matter
Temptation rarely announces itself. It grows in secrecy, loneliness, and exhaustion. Hedges aren't about distrust. They're about protecting something precious.
Practical hedges to consider
1. Transparency with devices. No secret passwords, hidden apps, or deleted messages.
2. Guard one-on-one time. Many couples avoid meals, car rides, or late-night conversations alone with someone of the opposite sex. Decide together what's wise for you.
3. Don't share marriage struggles with a potential rival. Emotional affairs often begin with "My spouse doesn't understand me."
4. Watch your media. Pornography is not harmless. It damages intimacy and trust. Seek help if you're struggling.
5. Mention your spouse often. Talk about them warmly at work and online. It signals that you're taken and proud of it.
6. Have accountability. A same-gender friend who can ask hard questions.
7. Keep your marriage warm. The best defense is a strong offense. Prioritize affection, date nights, and intimacy at home.
If you're already struggling
1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God "will with the temptation also make a way to escape." Take the exit now. Confess to God, cut off contact, and seek help from a pastor or Christian counselor. It's never too late to turn around.

A prayer for protection
Lord, guard our marriage. Protect our eyes, our hearts, and our minds. Expose any small compromise before it grows. Keep us faithful to each other and to You. Amen.
