Faith and Family in Foster Care and Adoption

Foster and adoptive families reflect God's heart in a powerful way. They open their homes and hearts to children who need love, safety, and belonging. It's beautiful, and often very hard. If you're fostering, adopting, or considering it, this is for you. And if you're a friend or church member, there's a place for you too.

God's heart for the fatherless

Psalm 68:5–6: "A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families."

James 1:27: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction."

We are adopted too

Ephesians 1:5: "Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself."

Adoption is at the heart of the gospel. God brings us into His family, gives us His name, and makes us heirs.

Adoption in Scripture

Moses was raised by Pharaoh's daughter (Exodus 2). Esther was raised by her cousin Mordecai, who "took for his own daughter" (Esther 2:7). Jesus Himself was raised by Joseph, His earthly father.

Encouragement for foster and adoptive parents

  • Be patient with trauma. Many children have experienced loss, neglect, or harm. Behaviors often come from fear, not defiance. Trauma-informed training and counseling can help.
  • Honor their story. Speak respectfully about birth families and children's histories.
  • Care for yourself. Get respite and support, and accept help.
  • Celebrate small wins. Healing takes time.
  • Remember you're not the savior. God is. You get to be part of His love for this child.

How others can help

Not everyone is called to foster or adopt, but everyone can support those who do:

  • Bring meals when a new child arrives.
  • Become a licensed babysitter or respite provider.
  • Donate clothes, car seats, or supplies.
  • Mentor older youth in foster care.
  • Pray for foster and adoptive families by name.

Speak belonging

Help every child in your home know they're chosen and claimed by God. Our Child of God Collection and kids' Christian apparel can be gentle daily reminders.

A prayer

Father of the fatherless, thank You for adopting us into Your family. Bless every foster and adoptive family. Give them patience, wisdom, and strength. Heal children who've been hurt, and let them know they belong. Show each of us how to help. Amen.
