Helping Anxious Kids With Faith and Practical Tools
Some children worry a lot: about school, storms, being away from parents, getting sick, or things they've heard about. As parents, it's hard to watch. The good news is that faith and practical tools can work together to help anxious kids feel safer and calmer.
Verses kids can hold onto
- Psalm 56:3: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee."
- Isaiah 41:10: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee."
- 1 Peter 5:7: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
- Joshua 1:9: "The LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
Choose one short verse and practice it together. When worry comes, they can say it out loud.
Calming tools that work
Name the feeling. Help them say, "I feel worried." Naming a feeling often shrinks it.
Breath prayers. Breathe in: "God is with me." Breathe out: "I am safe." Repeat slowly.
A worry box. Have kids write or draw their worries, put them in a box, and pray, "God, I'm giving this to You."
Predictable routines. Consistent bedtimes, mornings, and transitions help anxious kids feel secure.
Prepare for new things. Talk through what to expect before doctor visits, first days, or trips.
Comfort objects. A soft Jesus-gram bear or a verse night light can be a calming reminder at bedtime.
Move their bodies. Play outside, dance, or take a walk. Movement helps release anxious energy.
What not to do
- Don't dismiss feelings: "Don't be silly, there's nothing to worry about."
- Don't shame: "You just need more faith."
- Don't help them avoid every fear. Gentle, supported steps build courage.
When to get help
Talk to your child's pediatrician if anxiety:
- Lasts for weeks or gets worse
- Interferes with school, sleep, eating, or friendships
- Causes frequent stomachaches, headaches, or panic
- Leads them to avoid many normal activities
Getting help for a child's anxiety is an act of love, and God often works through counselors and doctors.
A prayer for anxious kids
Dear Jesus, when I feel worried, help me remember You are with me. Take my worries and give me Your peace. Help me be brave. Amen.
A prayer for parents
Lord, You know my child's fears. Give me patience, wisdom, and calm. Help me comfort them well and lead us to the right help when we need it. Wrap my child in Your peace. Amen.
