Modeling Faith as a Working Parent
If you work outside the home (or work from home while juggling kids), you may feel like there's barely time to cook dinner, let alone lead family devotions. Many working parents carry quiet guilt about not doing "enough" spiritually for their kids. Here's encouragement: faith is often passed on most powerfully in ordinary moments.
Work is not the enemy of faith
The Proverbs 31 woman bought fields, ran a business, and managed a household (Proverbs 31:16, 24). Paul made tents. Lydia sold purple cloth. Work and faith have always gone together.
Colossians 3:23: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."
Faith in the in-between moments
Deuteronomy 6:7: "…and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
Notice where faith is taught: at home, on the road, at bedtime, and in the morning. Everyday life, not scheduled programs.
Practical ideas for busy parents
- Car prayers: Pray on the way to school or daycare.
- Breakfast blessing: One verse and a quick prayer over cereal.
- Bedtime thanks: Each person names something they're thankful for.
- Worship music during the commute or while cooking.
- Weekend devotion: A slower family time once a week.
- Lunchbox notes with a short verse.
- Text a verse to older kids during the day.
Let them see your work as ministry
Talk about your work with your kids. Share how you try to be honest, kind, and helpful. Tell them when you prayed about something at work. Let them see that following Jesus happens at the office, hospital, store, or classroom too.
Let go of the guilt
You don't have to do everything. Presence matters more than perfection. A few consistent habits, an honest example, and a lot of love will speak volumes. If you've missed time, start again today.
Take care of your own soul
Kids catch faith from parents who are actually walking with God. Even five minutes with God before the day begins, with a verse on your travel mug or a line in a journal, can keep you anchored.
A prayer for working parents
Lord, I'm stretched between work and home. Help me be present when I'm with my kids, and faithful at my job. Show me small ways to pass on faith in everyday moments. Free me from guilt and fill me with Your peace. Amen.
