Preparing Spiritually for a New Baby

When you're expecting a baby, there's so much to prepare: the nursery, the car seat, the hospital bag. But preparing your heart, your marriage, and your home spiritually may be the most important preparation of all.

Your baby is already known

Psalm 139:13: "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb."

Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee."

God is already forming and knowing your child. You can begin praying for them now.

Ways to prepare spiritually

1. Pray for your baby. Pray for their health, development, personality, future faith, and future friends.

2. Pray for the birth. Ask for safety, wise medical care, and peace.

3. Choose a verse for your baby, and pray it over them throughout the pregnancy.

4. Write letters to your baby about your hopes and prayers.

5. Strengthen your marriage. Pray together, talk about the kind of parents you want to be, and protect time together.

6. Talk about faith at home. How will you pray, worship, and teach your child?

7. Plan a dedication or baptism according to your church's practice.

8. Build your village. Let friends, family, and church walk alongside you.

Hannah's gratitude

Hannah prayed for years for a child. When Samuel was born, she said:

1 Samuel 1:27: "For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him."

When you feel anxious

It's normal to feel worried about health, birth, finances, or becoming a parent. Bring those fears to God (Philippians 4:6–7), and talk openly with your doctor or midwife. If anxiety or sadness feels heavy during pregnancy or after birth, please tell your healthcare provider; support is available.

For partners

Pray for your partner daily. Ask how you can help. Speak blessing over your growing family.
