Teaching Toddlers About Jesus

Toddlers and preschoolers soak up the world around them. They learn songs, repeat words, and copy everything we do. That makes the early years a perfect time to plant simple, powerful truths about Jesus.

Mark 10:14: "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God."

2 Timothy 3:15: "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures."

Timothy learned Scripture as a child. Your little one can too.

5 simple truths toddlers can learn

  1. God made everything, including you!
  2. God loves you very much.
  3. Jesus is God's Son, and He is your friend.
  4. You can talk to God anytime.
  5. God is always with you.

Repeat these often, in short, cheerful sentences.

10 playful ideas

1. Sing. Simple songs like "Jesus Loves Me" teach truth through repetition.

2. Picture Bibles. Choose a toddler Bible with short stories and bright pictures.

3. Mealtime prayers. A short, repeated thank-you prayer before every meal.

4. Bedtime blessing. End each day with a simple blessing: "God loves you, and so do I."

5. Creation walks. Point out flowers, birds, and clouds: "God made that!"

6. Act out stories. Be animals on Noah's ark or walk around "Jericho."

7. Short memory verses. "God is love" (1 John 4:8). "I will trust" (Psalm 56:3).

8. Cuddly reminders. A plush friend like our Jesus-gram teddy bears can become a bedtime "prayer buddy."

9. Wear the truth. Faith-filled toddler tees and onesies let you talk about the message: "What does your shirt say? Yes, Jesus loves you!"

10. Model it. Let them see you pray, read your Bible, and sing in worship.

Keep it short and joyful

Toddler attention spans are short, and that's okay. A two-minute story, a quick prayer, and a happy song are plenty. Joy and consistency matter more than length.

A prayer for little ones

Lord, thank You for my little one. Help them know from their earliest days that You made them, love them, and are always with them. Help me teach them with patience and joy. Let their faith grow as they grow. Amen.
