How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

There are seasons when prayer feels like breathing — natural, effortless, alive. And then there are seasons when prayer feels like trying to lift something too heavy for your soul.

You sit in the quiet, but your thoughts feel tangled. You try to speak, but your heart feels numb. You reach for God, but the words simply won’t come.

If you’ve ever felt this, you’re in good company.

Hannah prayed without sound — her lips moved, but no words formed. Her pain was too deep for language, yet Scripture says God heard her cry.

David wrote psalms that weren’t polished prayers — they were groans, sighs, and raw emotion poured out before God.

Paul admitted that “we do not know what we ought to pray,” and then revealed something breathtaking:

The Holy Spirit prays for you when you can’t pray for yourself.

When your heart is too heavy, when your mind is too tired, when your spirit feels too overwhelmed…

He steps in.

Your silence is not empty — it’s sacred. Your tears are not wasted — they are prayers God collects. Your sighs are not ignored — they rise like incense before Him.

Prayer is not about perfect words. Prayer is about presence.

When you don’t know what to say, sit with Him anyway. Let your silence become your offering. Let your stillness become your prayer.

God hears the words you cannot speak.
