Keep Calm and Trust God Christian apparel: faith, depression and antidepressants

Is It a Lack of Faith to Take Antidepressants?

“If I really trusted God, would I need this pill?” I’ve heard that question at the pharmacy counter more times than I can count, usually whispered. If you’ve asked it too, you’re not alone, and you’re not faithless.

Medicine is one of the ways God helps

Luke, who wrote two books of the New Testament, was a physician (Colossians 4:14). Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his frequent stomach problems (1 Timothy 5:23). Isaiah told King Hezekiah’s servants to put a poultice of figs on his boil, and he recovered (Isaiah 38:21). Throughout Scripture, God works through prayer and through practical care.

We don’t call it a lack of faith when someone takes insulin, blood pressure medicine or antibiotics. Depression and anxiety involve the brain and body too. Treating them is good stewardship of the life God gave you.

What antidepressants do (and don’t do)

Antidepressants don’t change your personality, replace your faith, or make you “fake happy.” For many people, they lift the fog enough to get out of bed, think clearly, pray, connect with others and do the work of healing, often alongside counseling.

Before you stop: please read this

Some people stop their medicine suddenly because they feel better, or because someone told them to “just trust God.” Stopping abruptly can cause discontinuation symptoms (dizziness, irritability, flu-like feelings) and can bring depression back. If you want to come off a medicine, do it with your prescriber, who can help you taper safely.

If someone at church judged you

Well-meaning people sometimes say hurtful things. Their words don’t define you. Jesus said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do” (Mark 2:17). He came close to the hurting, and He still does.
