Starting Over After a Hard Season: How to Begin Again With God
By the Claimed by God Designs Team
The hardest part of the storm may be behind you: the loss, the breakdown, the breakup, the burnout, the diagnosis. Now you're standing in the aftermath, wondering how to start again when you don't feel like the person you used to be.
God Does New Things
“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19). God specializes in beginnings, often in places that look like nothing but dry ground.
Don't Despise Small Steps
When the Israelites were rebuilding the temple after exile, the new foundation looked tiny compared to what they'd lost. God asked, “For who hath despised the day of small things?” (Zechariah 4:10). Small beginnings still count. They may be exactly how God starts.
Forget What's Behind, Reach Forward
Paul wrote, “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark” (Philippians 3:13–14). That doesn't mean pretending the past didn't happen. It means not letting it have the final word.
Practical Ways to Begin Again
- Pick one next step. Not the whole plan. Just the next thing: a phone call, a walk, an application, a church service.
- Rebuild simple routines. Regular sleep, meals and movement give you solid ground.
- Reconnect with one person. You don't have to rebuild your whole social life at once.
- Grieve what changed. Starting over often includes mourning what you hoped for.
- Expect good days and hard days. Both are part of moving forward.
- Get support. A counselor can help you process what happened and plan what's next.
Same God, New Day
“His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23). Every morning is a fresh start with the same faithful God.
A Prayer for New Beginnings
Lord, I don't know what this next chapter looks like. Show me the next step, and give me courage to take it. Make a way where I can't see one. Amen.
