Why Healing Takes Time: Slow Healing Is Still Healing
By the Claimed by God Designs Team
You've prayed. You've done the work. And you're still not “over it.” Some days feel like progress; others feel like you're right back at the start. If you're wondering why healing is taking so long, you're not alone, and you're not doing it wrong.
Jesus Once Healed in Stages
In Mark 8, Jesus touched a blind man's eyes and asked what he saw. The man said, “I see men as trees, walking.” Jesus touched his eyes again, “and he was restored, and saw every man clearly” (Mark 8:24–25). The Son of God could have healed him in an instant. This time, He chose two steps.
We don't know every reason why, but the story reminds us of something important: partial healing is still healing in progress. God isn't finished.
God Binds Up Wounds
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). Binding a wound protects it while it heals. It doesn't make it heal overnight. Emotional wounds, like physical ones, often need time, care and the right support.
Why Healing Isn't a Straight Line
- Setbacks are normal. Anniversaries, stress or a reminder can stir up old pain. That's not starting over.
- Layers come up over time. Healing one part can make room to face the next.
- Your body is involved. Sleep, stress and health all affect emotional recovery.
- Some wounds need skilled help. Trauma, grief and depression often heal best with a counselor walking alongside you.
How to Be Patient With the Process
- Measure progress in months, not days.
- Notice small wins: a better morning, a hard conversation you handled, a day you didn't cry.
- Keep showing up to what helps: prayer, community, counseling, rest.
- Remember Philippians 1:6: “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it.”
Healing Is Holy Work
Every step you take toward wholeness, every honest prayer and every hard appointment, matters to God. Slow healing is still healing.
