A Back-to-School Blessing for Your Kids
A new school year brings excitement, nerves, new teachers, new friends, and new challenges. Before your kids walk through the school doors, one of the best things you can do is cover them in prayer and speak blessing over them.
A back-to-school blessing
Lay a hand on your child's shoulder or head, and pray:
"[Name], may the Lord bless you and keep you this school year. May He give you wisdom to learn, courage to try new things, and kindness toward everyone you meet. May you find good friends and be a good friend. May you know that you are loved, chosen, and never alone. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. Amen."
Psalm 121:8: "The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore."
Verses for the new school year
- Isaiah 54:13: "And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children."
- James 1:5: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God… and it shall be given him."
- Joshua 1:9: "The LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
- Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
First-day faith traditions
- Breakfast blessing: Pray over each child before the first day.
- Verse of the year: Choose a verse for each child and write it on their first-day photo sign.
- Lunchbox notes: Slip a short verse or encouraging note inside.
- After-school debrief: "What was the best part? What was hard?" Then pray about it.
For nervous kids
Acknowledge their feelings, practice the routine ahead of time, and give them a short verse to say when they feel nervous, like "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee" (Psalm 56:3).
Bless the teachers
Teachers shape our kids every day. Pray for them by name, send a thank-you note, or give a small gift. Our Christian gifts under $25 are perfect teacher gifts.
Back-to-school essentials
Send them off with a reminder of who they are in a faith-message backpack or lunch bag.
A parent's prayer
Lord, I'm sending my children into a new school year. Go with them where I can't. Protect their bodies, minds, and hearts. Give them wisdom, kindness, and courage. Bless their teachers and classmates. And give me peace as I let them go each morning. Amen.
