Faith-Filled Birthday Traditions for Kids

Birthdays are a celebration of a life God created on purpose. Beyond cake and presents, they're a perfect time to remind your child how loved they are, by you and by God.

Psalm 139:16: "…and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."

Before your child was born, God knew every day of their life. That's worth celebrating!

Faith-filled birthday traditions

1. A birthday blessing. At dinner, each family member says something they love about the birthday child. Then a parent prays a blessing over them.

2. A yearly letter. Write your child a letter each birthday: what you've seen God do in them this year and your prayers for the next. Keep them in a box to give them when they're grown.

3. A verse for the year. Choose a Bible verse for your child's new year of life. Write it on their card.

4. A gratitude list. List things to thank God for from the past year, one for each year of their age.

5. Tell their story. Share the story of their birth or adoption and how you prayed for them.

6. A giving gift. Let your child choose a way to bless someone else on their birthday.

7. A birthday breakfast prayer. Start the day by thanking God for them.

8. Measure growth. Mark their height on a wall or doorframe and talk about how they're growing inside too (Luke 2:52).

Wise birthdays

Psalm 90:12: "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

For older kids and teens, birthdays can be a time to reflect: What did I learn this year? Where do I want to grow?

A birthday blessing

"[Name], happy birthday! God made you on purpose, and we're so thankful for you. May this year be full of joy, growth, and love. May you know Jesus more and shine His light. The Lord bless you and keep you."
