After the Funeral

Everyone shows up for the funeral. Then the casseroles stop, the cards stop, and the phone goes quiet, right when the grief gets heavier. This page is for the person left in that quiet, and for the people who want to keep showing up.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.”Romans 12:15 (WEB)

What to say, and what to skip

  • Say their loved one’s name.
  • “I’m thinking of you today.”
  • “I remember when [a real memory].”
  • “No need to reply.”
  • A specific offer: “I’m bringing dinner Thursday at 6.”
🚫 Skip
  • “Let me know if you need anything.” (They won’t.)
  • “Everything happens for a reason.”
  • “God needed another angel.”
  • “At least…” anything.
  • Timelines: “Aren’t you over it yet?”
“So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.”Job 2:13 (WEB). Job’s friends got the first week right.

For churches and small groups

Most churches are wonderful in week one and absent by month three. A simple care team can change that. Assign one person to each check-in on the plan above, so no one carries it all and nothing gets dropped.

Message to your groupOur friend is three weeks past the funeral, and the hardest months are ahead. Can we each take one month this year? Sign up for a meal, a card, a coffee, or a ride. Please keep what they share with you private unless they say it’s okay to share.
  • Protect their privacy. Ask before adding details to a prayer chain.
  • Remember the dates. Birthdays, holidays and the one-year anniversary hit hard.
  • Know your limits. You are a friend, not a counselor. If someone seems stuck, unsafe or unable to function, gently encourage professional help and stay close.
